Hi,
I would like to build an home server for:
  • media storage with RAID
  • virtual machines and docker. I will run 2 stable VM (Win and Mint), plus several other machines for testing/learning/repository/etc..
  • In future, I would like to add also a NVidia card, in order to play with machine learning, CUDA, etc..
So my idea was to spend <1500 €/$.

For the moment, I think that I will use:

Hardware
  • cpu (380€): amd 3900x
  • ram: (~300€) 64gb. Maybe ECC, but not mandatory.
Storage:
  • 1 (110€) TB ssd for host OS and other stuffs that need high speed
  • (320€) 2 x HD WD Red with 6 TB. Configuration RAID 1 . In future I may want to add a third disk, in order to use RAID 5
  • (150€) 1 SHD with 6 TB, for less important stuffs
Host OS: proxmox.

Now I'm looking about a motherboard, with support for ECC RAM and in future adding a NVIDIA card (that card should be visible to virtual machine also via pass-throught). It would be nice to have also a Remote Management and 10Gbe, but it's not mandatory. Do you have any suggestion here?

I don't have a strong opinion about power supply. Same for air ventilation(well, probably Noctua). Any suggestions?

Otherwise, is there a list of home server setups in this forum? (from other users).

Thank you for your time,
Marco
