Hello Community, I am building a computer for my friend's birthday, but the only experience i have is "assisting" (more of watching and listening to what i am told what to do) my father build his PC back in 2002. So far I have plucked out these parts, but I am still in need of a sound card, optical drive, network card.
I am wondering if i should have more fans to cool things since I know my set is 500W.
EdpNo=2851011&CatId=1510]Tower- Ultra Rogue M950 Full Tower Gaming Case
CPU- FX-9370[/url]
Mobo- Crosshair V Formula Z
GPU- ASUS Radeon R9 270X
RAM (2x8Gb)- Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB Kit
Power Supply- Rosewill Stallion Series RD500-2DB 500W ATX12V

My OS is most likely going to be Windows, but I am planning to run a version of Linux that i enjoy greatly first.
I am also putting together a Intel competing build just for price wise which will be published here soon.

What I would like is for the community to respond and tell me what [/b]I need in terms of components, cooling, etc.[/b] This is made for high end games, but the price should be no more than $1300.

Would help a lot if you stated what parts you have already? Does he have a monitor already? A hard drive?

Your part list is incomplete.

It's a birthday gift....

HPU is good
RAM is good
PSU is O.K. Better to go with a Seasonic, Antec, Any Corsair THAT IS NOT PART OF THE CX line.
For the price of that cpu, you could go for an i5, but hey, it's a gift. An intel CPU.
Intel MOBO
OR another intel...
Mobo is top of the line
Case link is bad, so I can't check it. All of the links are bad for me...

No HDD or dvd drive either. Get a WD Black if price allows or a WD Blue if hdd budget is under 70 USD.
An SSD for the OS will speed everything up, but is around 100 USD.
You'll need a OS, such as Windows 8.1 or Windows 7. I am ONLY RECOMMENDING win 8.1 for better support and the latest stuffs.
A dvd drive is required for installing the OS.

What does being a birthday have to do with the price/performance? and why such expensive motherboards?

Also for OP, any seagate barracuda/nas or wd blue, red, or black drive will be fine and you can use a USB dvd drive if you don't want to buy one. You can also make a usb boot stick but I don't think its worth the time, someone you know should have a usb dvd drive you can borrow.

I understand that the list in incomplete. I stated "So far I have plucked out these parts, but I am still in need of a sound card, optical drive, network card etc. ". I just showed what parts I have on my list "to-get" and was asking the community what other parts should I get.

As for OS, I was planning to run on this computer Linux until I can receive a copy of Windows for a lower price, or wait until Windows 9 Beta comes out. I may also run Steam OS and Ubuntu because this computer is made for fun, not high-end gaming, not browsing web only.

I see where you are going, but I made this part collection to be AMD. I am planning to make a competing Intel build eventually.

In 2004, motherboards didn't have wireless networking. As of now, I am not sure. I know they come with wired networkinng and maybe Bluetooth, but not wireless I believe.

certain mobo's come with wireless and bluetooth. I have seen mobo's with NFC and an external dongle. Most micro-atx have wireless. Most higher end ones have wifi.
