Hello, I'm looking for some recommendations/help for my first Z170 build.

The build should be max $1250 without a case which I'll be buying locally.

This are my current possible components:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
    Motherboard: ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING
    Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400MHz
    Storage: Samsung 750 EVO 500GB
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X
    PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 650W 80+ Gold
The price is approximately $1240 (including taxes and shipping).

Everything must be sold by Amazon as I can only buy from them.

Looking forward for any kind of help as I'm still deciding what components to buy.

Thanks!

Yeah something like 3000Mhz would be better. Ok they'd both run at same 2133Mhz speed unless you enabled XMP but if you dont want to OC it at all then why bother with the 2400Mhz? These days its so easy and safe to OC RAM (just one click in BIOS) that its worth doing esp with a good setup like that.

You wont really need the Evo 850 as although faster in real life you arent going to benefit much but if you got a 120gb with a mechanical hdd then the SSD would be more of a cache drive. Is probably better using the SSD as a normal HDD but it depends whether 500gb is enough for you. I personally dont like huge hard drives because if they fail you lose so much and I'd rsther store data files on peripheral drives but its a case of what you...

You mean getting higher frequency RAM? The 3000MHz sticks are only $3 more expensive. I've never used high frequency RAM that requires XMP/overlocking but maybe I should take a look at it.

By the way, do you recommend getting a 850 EVO 120GB + 1TB WD Black instead of the 750 EVO 500GB or should I be fine with it?

For storage it really depends on how many games you plan on installing, and how many photos/downloads you plan on having over your computers lifespan. If you do go with the 1TB drive I wouldn't waste money on the black drives. I bought 3 blacks and 4 blues for a couple of projects recently and noticed zero difference in speed. So just get a blue drive and watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWD0g43ZoEk I don't normally watch his stuff or really any youtube tech videos but this one is good.

I'll probably stick with the 500GB SSD then as I don't play many games simultaneously (or I do but I delete the ones I'm done with). If that's not the case I'll then have a look at getting the blue drive instead of the black, thanks!

There is a difference between WD blue and black, but again not a great deal but mechanical HDD are v much on their way out tbh. If you wanted an SSD cache drive maybe getting a 120gb NVME witj a WD blue might be better, but I'd probably just choose the SATA ssd as my system drive. Whatever you choose should run nicely :)

Solution

I picked the 2400MHz because for some reason they were cheaper than the 2133MHz. I'll probably buy the 3000MHz though and read about how to enable XMP and how it works.

About the drive, you're probably right, I think the best would be to use the 750 EVO as my main drive and that's it. 500 GB will probably be enough for me as I don't download lots of things. I currently have a 1TB black drive and I only use 300 GB of it.

Thank you very much for the help! I'll leave the thread open if someone else would like to comment on something but I think I'm pretty much done here, I'll buy the stuff whenever I can.
