Hi all,

I am looking for suggestions for a new card on a maximum budget of around £130.00 (live in UK so this is $200.00
I have been running the on-board graphics for a while and am desperate to get a decent card so don't want to wait for the FX 5900 to come down in price.

PC used for gaming & video editing.

current relevant spec:
MSI NForce mobo (onboard everything including graphics)
XP 1.8
512MB DDR RAM
19" Monitor

My options appear to revolve around a TI4800, one of the FX cards or an ATI card.

Any suggestions or points welcome.

Many thanks

Well, in the US, $200 gets you a Radeon 9700 non-pro, which cannot be beat for that price.

If you can't find one of those, go for a Geforce FX 5600 ULTRA rev 2, or a Radeon 9500 PRO/9600 PRO if you can find 'em

Thanks Cleeve.
I can't find a 9700 non pro from my usual discount UK suppliers.

I can get the following:
Sapphire Atlantis 128MB ATI 9600 Pro for $230
Gainward 128MB FX 5600 Ultra/760 for $200
Gainward 256MB FX 5600 Ultra for $250

Am tempted to go with the 128MB Gainward as I have read this is overclocked out of the box and runs very well.
Not sure if the extra $50 is worth it for the 256MB version though....will I notice a big difference?

My reasoning behind the $200 card is that this will serve me well for 12 months and I am not a hardcore gamer.

Anyone have any final thoughts before I splash my cash.

Thanks

256 MB is almost completely useless unless you run very high resolutions (Like 1600*1200) with very high sampling Antialiassing (6x). Otherwise, it'll do nothing for you.

The Fx5600 ultra 128MB is probably your best bet.

Just be POSITIVE it's the rev.2, as otherwise, you will be hosed.

These days, no matter what company you like, be it <b>nVidia, ATi, or whatever,</b> no matter how logical your reasons, you're labeled an <b>idiot</b> or a <b>fanboy</b>, or <b>both.</b>

Actually a $30 price difference (between it and R9600P) doesn't seem TOO bad for the Rev.1; but I'd always be thinkng, oh what I COULD have had for just a few bucks more (Rev.2)

Just depends on whether that extra money can be spent elsewhere. If it was $200+ for a non-Ultra (like the ones here at FutureShop) then you'd definitely be getting hosed.

I'd say it's almost an even toss up between cards depending on budget. And if you can pay the extra the R9600P and Ultra Rev.2 would be worth the extra IMO. However the 256Ultra is definitely out if it's not a rev.2 The 256mb really wouldn't be ALL that useful for what is still a mid-range card, even the Top of the lines BARELY scratch the 256mb's surface.

Well....I didn't read the small print close enough forst time round.
Having checked the product code it is NOT the rev 2 board but the original FX5600 ultra - the XP(rev2) version is almost $300 so that puts that one out.
Finally found a 9700 but again, it's almost $300.
Looks like the only one I have left to go for is the Sapphire 9600 pro but I'm worried about compatability with my nforce board.

Maybe I should wait for the Rev 2 FX ultra to come down in price...I don't like the fact that for $200 I only really have 1 choice !!!

The R9600P should have no (well no more than any other card/board combo) problems with an Nforce board. It's a .net myth that there is some preference/conspiracy.
Rememeber it's not Nvidia selling you the board it's Gigabyte, ASUS, etc. And if NV $crewed these companies customers, they wouldn't buy NV chipsets in the future, and NV knows that. Same thing if the future ATI chipsets did the same to NV boards.
Expect perhaps 'ADDITIONAl' features using one or the other in the future (perhaps the ICP only can be used without disabling, when used with ATI cards, that's different), but for now there is no diff.

The 5200 ultra will NOT play future directX 9 games acceptably because it lacks the raw power to do so.

It'll provide a nice DirectX 9 slideshow.

Thanks for all your help and input.

Bought myself a Powercolor 9600 pro last night and a new 450W dual fan PSU (strange but there is no on/off power button on this!!)

Haven't tried the machine yet as had to resit the CPU before I had to go out. Moving the old PSU out must have moved the CPU slightly-bit temperamental at times!

What is the world coming to when I wait all this time to get a card, install the thing wih excitement and then......run off out to spend the night with a lovley lady...hmmmm.

Will post any comment on the card in case anyone else is considering same purchase.

Thanks again.

Sounds to me like your priorities are just fine. It's when you stay home and play video games all weekend instead of gettin' busy that people start to worry.
