I am new to building computers, I have been looking around for a good HSF for the new computer I am building. I am using a KT7A-Raid mobo, my only problem is that many HSFs don't fit on the mobo, it looks like it can only fit up to a 60x60 base. So if anyone has any suggestions on what HSF that has those dimensions is good, then I would greatfully appreciate it. Also I am using a 1.2 GHz Athlon T-Bird processor. Thank you.

Try the monster II HSF, ocz.safeshopper.com, $24.99. It is designed for the KT7 family motherboards. It measures approx. 56mm x 70 mm by 45 mm tall (without the fan attached). It fits like a glove (so to speak). Ask for the Delta fan for max. cooling or get the Comair Quiet Fan (which is actually louder than a PSU fan but nothing like the Delta). The Delta is about 5 degrees C cooler. Use thermal compound not the "goop" on the back of the HSF.

Downsides are no fan sensor as both fans are too powerful for the FAN header on the mobo. I think you have to explicitly ask for the Delta fan in comments and don't know if it adds to the cost. (I have the Comair on my KT7).
The company takes 4-5 days to ship with 2 day deliver so they are a little slow.

I believe the GlobalWin FOP38-1 also fits the KT7. It only comes with a Delta fan. I think the orgiginal heatsink needed slight modifications.

Read a review of the Monster II at www.madonion.com. Search for "OCZ".

How much does the Super Orb need to be modified to fit onto the KT7 motherboard? Is it way to big or will a little bit of cutting (as mentioned above) work?

I also am building my first using an ABIT KT7A-RAID mobo. I got a Swiftech MC370-0A after "quickly" reviewing Tom's cooler article and reading his "How To". This board requires a standard 3-pin, normal power CPU cooling fan to be connected to the fan 1 terminal and says in the manual "the motherboard will automatically shut down" if this connector does not sense a load and the correct range of rpm (through the 3rd wire I suppose). I don't know what I'm going to do yet as I have no replies to this question I posted yet so if you find out a work-around let me know otherwise make sure you get a cooler that will plug directly to the mobo 3 pin terminal unless you want to get into some modifications to make it work. The other thing I didn't consider was the NOISE. Turns out that the Swiftech is the loudest of the bunch so I may end up replacing it anyway before this is all over....

It can't be that hard to build a PC.....naive newbie
Edited by mongoose on 02/12/01 00:22 AM.

I have tried three different CoolerMaster heatsink/fans, the Global Win FOP38, and the Hedgehog Copper heatsink with the Delta 7000rpm fan, and non of them cool as well as my Alpha PAL6035 heatsink with the Sunon 30cfm fan. The Alpha setup is quiter than the GlobalWin FOP38 by far, it about the same size, fits my ABIT KT7A-RAID mobo just fine, and keeps my 1.2Ghz TBird cool while running at 1370mhz. If you get the GlobalWin FOP38, it will cool the CPU, but the Delta fan on that thing is so loud that I didn't want to turn the computer on for very long at all. I can handle listening to fans, and the noise generated by many normal fans, but when I could hear the Delta Fan over my MP3's without having to really crank up the volume, I quit using it. Save your money and frustration and get the Alpha and Sunon fan.

Hi, i've been thinking about going with the Alpha PAL6035 / Sunon fan combo b/c of all the things i hear about it being quiet. Fan noise is my main concern about cooling my T-bird on my KT7a-RAID, I was wondering just how loud the Sunon fan really is? i know it's a strange question... but when you say it's "quiet," is this in relative terms to other TORNADO-ish Overclockers fans or all normal-user fans in general? Basically, i dont want my new PC to be much louder than the one i'm on right now which i bought off the shelf at Best Buy in 1994 (a Pentium 166 on EDO ram, hehehe)...
I hope my question isn't too weird, thanks!
