Hello There!

I was looking to start a build using the AMD FX 9590 but I wasn't sure which psu to use and which motherboard to use. I have looked on plenty of forums for the psu and many have said use 850w and up but on pcpartpicker.com, when I inputted all of my planned components, the estimated power draw was about 350w (I am willing to give or take 100w as that is a computer generated estimate). I wanted to have a lot of headroom so I looked into the EVGA 650 GQ. Will that be enough or is pcpartpicker just completely wrong?

Also, the motherboard I was looking at for the fx 9590 is the Asus M5A99FX PRO/R2.0. On its support page it says it supports the FX 9590 but it says "special thermal required". Does it mean special thermal is needed for the cpu (I hopefully have that covered - Cooler Master Seidon 240v) or that special thermal is needed for the VRM because I have heard about how power intensive this cpu is (220w tdp) and that it burns out most motherboards.

Just one more thing, I know a lot of people will say "don't get this cpu because...". I know I shouldn't get this CPU but I probably will because I want to.

Thanks.

Solution

My GPU is a Nvidia Geforce 1030.
Ram will be HyperX DDR3 1600 8gb
Case is the Aerocool Aero-500 (with a window and card reader)
Cooler is the Cooler Master Seidon 240v
HDD Is so old that the label has come off but it is 1TB
Maybe get a 128GB ssd

Both the EVGA 650 GQ and 850 are decent quality and efficient gold certified PSUs however, for the extra $20 I would get the 850W as a 650W is absolute min (wattage wise) and would not allow for any future expansion, GPU upgrade or OC.

The best MB for the FX-9590 is Crosshair V Formula Z or the Sabertooth equivalent. You will have issues with the M5A99FX as the VRMs get hot and this thermal hotspot would continually shut your system down under load especially if you intend any OC.

An FX-9590 is an extreme beast of a processor and difficult to stabilize if you wish to exceed it's stock 4.7GHz frequency. It is very capable and can be tamed however the above requirements are important.
Your Mid Tower case is adequate and the AIO cooler will handle the thermal requirement at stock however again this is minimal and would limit any OC.

It is your prerogative to purchase the FX-9590 ofc however it would be remiss of me not to mention that the AM3+ platform and FX series CPUs are EOL (End of Life) with no upgrade path. Your money would be much better spent on the new AM4 Ryzen 7 platform with DDR4 memory capability.

I have built several FX-9590 and MB combos in the past for clients so this is not guess work and it is understandable many would try to steer you away from what you propose.

Good Luck with whatever you choose Matthew and we will be here to help.

Thanks for all your support in threads related to FX bro!
I'm starting a new YouTube channel in Brazil related to hardware and overclocking as I see only a few serious technical channels here. I love hardware and I want to buy FX and Ryzen to compare the platforms.

I have a Xeon X3450 that I run at 4.2ghz daily and to start the channel fits, but I always want a FX 9590 trying to overclock it near or above 5ghz, but I know that it's a beast compared to my actual PC in terms of thermal dissipation and as prices of 9590 are really high, I prefer to buy FX9370 and do some overclocking trying to reach something near 5ghz daily.
Power consumption isn't a problem, I know that it's a dated platform, really, relax, I know the <Mod Edit> that I'm doing in 2020 KKKKK but I really want to do this build for a long time and I already learned a lot reading your comments.

So I really want to ask you what you think about the build, especially about the PSU that I'm choosing:

FX 9370

Asus 990FX Sabertooth R2.0( I think that VRM is able to do some overclocking)

RX 580

Gamemax Iceberg 360mm push&pull with 3 scythe kazeflex fans with 70CFM each

XPG Core Reactor 850W( that's the major doubt I think, because it has 70A in 12v rail, but I've seen that near 5ghz 400W is realistic in FX and RX 580 isn't a tdp friendly gpu.... So I don't know, but it's one of the best PSU that I'm finding in stores in Brazil.. what do you think?

Really thanks for all the knowledge and if you could help me, I promise that when launches the channel I will send special thanks!
