recommended replacement for Corsair CX750M

Someone I know purchased a CX750M and after adding a video card in the motherboard, there is this unbearable coil whine. I thought it was the video card at first because "gigabyte gtx 970 g1 gaming" is known for its coil whine but I pinpoint its from the PSU because I hear the noise more outside case than inside. Since he missed out the warranty since Best Buy's is only 14 days, he's planning on getting a new one. He can RMA the PSU but he doesnt want to deal with the wait 1-2 week wait and buying another unit at a Micro Center where its lenient on its return policy. We are looking at the "EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply" because of the great reviews, quiet, and reliably. We are planning a quiet gaming PC. This is his build so far:

If you choose EVGA only buy one of the following series: SuperNova G2 / P2 / T2. The EVGA series Supernova B2 / GS are also appropriate, just lesser quality than the aforementioned.

Maybe a 650W instead of 550W since that CPU is a K version it would be nice to have that extra headroom if he decides to overclock it

Maybe a 650W instead of 550W since that CPU is a K version it would be nice to have that extra headroom if he decides to overclock it

550W is sufficient for overclocking the 4790K and overclocking the 970. +650W is called for when running SLI. If the quality is good enough, as are the ones I linked, 550-620W is perfect for his setup.

I agree with you Sir Mark, that having some leverage watts-wise is smart, but he will have that with the ones I linked..

He "might" plan to overclock it, SLI, and modify so he figures 750w would give him the wiggle room. He's huge on noise though. Looks like the EVGA G2 750w is sold out at the Micro Center at Tustin. CA

I have the G2 Supernova 750W myself and plan on adding SLI 970.

Trust me when I say, that the G2 750W from EVGA is amazing quality, all the way up there with the best of the best. Will be a huge improvement over the CX750, which has received a lot of criticism for sub-par quality. The G2 would be a very wise choice.

Thanks. I am leading towards the G2 and this forum is raving about the quality of these. I also have a corsair CX750M on my personal build but I havent tapped most of its power yet so it "might" have the buzz soon once I add video cards. I am quite concerned also because I am a graphic designer and the noise can make me lose focus.

I had the CX750 as well from Corsair and eventually got rid of it for the same reasons as your friend - unbearable noise. On top of that, the components are sub-par quality. Not 100% Japanese capacitors, not enough X and Y caps on line filtering and generally just not good enough for an almost 100 dollar PSU. The series from Corsair worth mentioning are HX and AX series, as they are top-notch,

Thanks for the suggestion but my mind is settled on the EVGA G2. I just put the gtx 970 on my personal build and my cx970m also has the noise but its lower than my friend's. I can now fully pinpoint its the PSU. I am waiting to gather funds and grab the EVGA at MicroCenter. Sometimes Microcenter price match as I am crossing my fingers. *Sigh* going have to redo all the wiring because it was tucked so nicely. Dont like having these spare cx750m laying around so I might RMA them and hopefully get a different model when we build a computer for someone.
