Hi I am interested in building custom desktop primarily for recording music, but that is also good enough to play some games like Civ V and Skyrim on decent quality. I really have no idea on where to begin, although I have some experience with gaming computers, but a lot has changed since I did. Also, if you guys could point me to some software for recording that would be great, too. My budget is around 1k$ not including the software. Thanks in advance!

It's £1006 and will get you playing and recording at very high settings. :)

That seems pretty good but is there anything there that specifically helps for the recording part? Is there anything that would even do that? I'm just kind of assuming there is, but there very well could not be. While I was researching I found something called a sound card, which is similar to a graphics card I think, but from what I saw it only helps your audio quality, not necessarily the recording part.
