Can a usb flash drive be used to record live tv?

Both and other devices suoh as hdd recorder with usb port. My lg smart tv and philips hdd recorder Don't allow recording on usb flash memory. Is this due to characteristics of flash memory, usb2 speed, formatting, or what, and is there a way round problem?
