I have a camorder sony xr155. After a power cut due to a flat battery,it is showing now the error format of the hard drive and I can not access the HDD anymore. I managed to take out the ZIF Toshiba HDD and bought an adaptor ZIF-USB. I can see the HDD as a mass storage but the disk is not assigned. I have to initialize it , it means format it right ? I don't want to do that because I really want to retrieve some data on the disk. Did anyone face this problem before and solve it ? Please, share. Thank you.

It uses a file system native to windows so any of the wiondows based file recovery tools would work. Select one that can scan deleted or corrupt partitions.

FYI, here is the HDR-XR155 service manual:
http://elektrotanya.com/?q=showresult&what=sony%20hdr-xr155&kategoria=&kat2=schematics

The Level 3 section of the manual contains the circuit diagrams:
http://elektrotanya.com/sony_hdr-xr150_xr155_level-3_ver-1.0_sm.pdf/download.html

Page 14 shows the connector pinouts. The internal ATA/MMC connector is a 45-pin flex type. It reduces to a 40-pin ZIF at the HDD end.

See the pinouts on page 6-6 of the Level 2 manual:
http://elektrotanya.com/sony_hdr-xr150_xr155_level-2_ver-1.0_sm.pdf/download.html

The pinout looks similar to this one, with minor differences:
http://pinoutsguide.com/HD/ata_sata_zif_pinout.shtml

When you say that you can see the HDD as a mass storage device, all this means is that your PC can see the USB-ATA bridge IC in your adapter. What does a tool such as HD Sentinel report about the drive behind the bridge?

http://www.hdsentinel.com/

IMHO, before you attack your problem with various data recovery software, I would examine the drive's SMART report using HD Sentinel. Then I would examine the first few sectors using a disc editor in readonly mode. This should tell you something about the file system and partitioning, if any. A good freeware tool is DMDE. I can help you if you wish to do this.

Hi,

Just came back from a long trip, sorry.
First thank you for replying so fast.

I have tried Recuva but it could not see the disk.

To reply to fzabkar,

Your answer is a bit to technical for me, the cabling plan ...

1. Windows can see the disk. the disk management says : disk 2 unknown, not initialized, unalocated.
so if i want to access the disk i have to format it.

2. I downloaded the hd sentinel. hd sentinel pro 4.3 trial version.
it sees the disk but could not give any infomation on it. I wanted to do a surface test but not available for the trial version.

i ve tried to do a backup with Paragon backup and recovery, it does not see the 1.8 hd.
The only solution left is I quick format the 1.8 hd and try to recover the data as deleted or formatted data ???

Formatting your drive is a very bad move.

ISTM that the drive has physical problems, not logical. Could we see the ZIF-USB adapter? Perhaps its pinout does not match the drive???

ISTM = it seems to me
IMHO = in my humble opinion

The 50-pin connector is for a CompactFlash (CF) device.

Yours is a CE device. It appears to be compatible with your adapter.

Does your drive spin? Can you hear anything or feel anything? Does it warm up?

If the board is dead, then look for a small surface mounted fuse near pins 38 and 39 of the ZIF connector.

What is the model number of your drive?

If the board is dead, then you could upload a photo of the component side to a file sharing service.

same ref than this 1
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-MK1234GAL-1-8-120GB-HDD-Sony-DV-Camera-iPod-Classic-6th-7th-Hard-Drive-/200879895906?pt=US_Internal_Hard_Disk_Drives&hash=item2ec55ff562

you mean if the board is dead, you would see it on the beige bar of the zif connector ?
it beige bar looks fine to me. i connected again the disk but it is so small, i don t know if it is spinning but i could hear small noise when i approach my ear to the disk.

how do you give a file to the file sharing service ?

if I put the hard disk face with the beige bar connector up and the adaptor face with the beige bar also up. the cable ribbon connected between, is seen only on the white side (no letter on) with 1 end blue to adaptor and 1 end white to the connector disk. Is it the right connection ?

It is not getting hot. there is a noise but not sure if spinning noise or not ?!
Now when I connect the disk to the camcorder it says 'overheated, wait...'" error C:13:02

The "C:13:02" error is listed on page 1-1 of the service manual. It's a "Disc Access Error".

The "remedy" is to remove the power source, reconnect, and try again, but of course you would have tried that.

The manual does list a Toshiba MK1234GAL drive. Although Toshiba's documentation is confusing, the adapters that you've found do appear to match the pinout in the manual.

Here is the relevant section:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/HDR-XR150_155_ZIF_CE_1-8in_HDD-pinout.jpg

The fact that the drive appears to be spinning would suggest that it has an internal fault rather than a PCB fault.

BTW, I don't believe you can do any damage by installing the flex cable upside down. That's because the cable is tinned only on one side, and the ZIF connector appears to have a only single row of pins.

I can't explain the "overheating" error, though. Perhaps it's referring to the temperature of the battery pack? The code for that would be "C:06:00".

HI,

I red that the error 'overheating' and 'format error' (the ones i that i have got) are common errors. These errors are mentioned for all type of hard disc access error.

If the board is dead it would mean that nothing happens when the disc is connected, isn t it ?
The noise I could hear was the spinning noise ?
The softwares that are not free, that you have to buy, are they really much more efficient, more powerful and can do more than the free ones ??

The PCB is it the board ?
The battery is fine. I got same error for my all 3 batteries.

Thanks for making some research for me.

Hi, try this, bring up the CMD upon plugging in the HDD, type chkdsk O: /f/r (O is the example drive letter yours may be different). See how it works.

OR,

Try this, a data recovery software: Free and Decent.

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

Good luck.

You can upload pictures to a file sharing service such as RapidShare or ImageShack.

You may need to remove the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) in order for us to see the components. It would also be useful for us to see the ZIF adapter and the inside of the connector, just to be absolutely certain that an upside down cable cannot damage the drive.

Note that a flatbed scanner (CCD type) can often give produce better images than a camera.

To open the disk , i need special screwdriver. So in the mean time,
I am trying Photorec, I CAN SEE MY FILES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you, thank you, they still exist !!
I did not try to recover anything yet.
There is an option c to copy the file, where does it copy to ?
I did dare to go further, so scared that it could write on the disk.

I am reading the instructions carefully, Photorec looks really magic !!
Thank you so much.
I ll come back to you when i have tried something.

Do you restore your files back?
In my opinion, you are really correct not to format it immediately. The formatting process often makes everything mess up.

So, do not format it and try to restore your saved data back by using some data recovery programs.

In fact, after searching “drive data recovery program” over the internet, you could easily get plenty of data recovery programs. But, no all of them could retrieve your wanted data back completely. Therefore, read much more articles and threads to select a most proper one for your drive. (Download some drive data recovery freeware here: http://geeksdo.com/freeware/data-recovery.html)

After the data recovery process, you’d better not forget to format this drive and check whether it could be fixed.

After these troubles, I hope you could learn a lesson to back up everything important on different storage devices.

Hi,

I have my files back, it looks like all files are recovered but have to check closer and play them. I think it is fine.

In fact, my partition was corrupted.
I tried a few times to recopy my files, only the first time it found them all nearly 1600 video files, and the 2nd and following times, it was stuck on a same file, I had to copy in several times.

Thank you so much to all who have helped me. Thanks to the french person Christophe Grenier who develops and maintains the software. It is really fantastic !!

lonewolf 7 really deserves his badge 'Storage expert'.
6th time best answer !!

Again thanks to all.

Help!! I am in a similar situation. I am attempting a recovery of my fathers Handycam HDR-XR200 that was dropped in saltwater. The camera its self is dead but I removed the HDD (toshiba mk1231gal) and bought a usb enclosure. I have PhotoRec installed and it recognizes that the toshiba hdd is connected. Can you tell me more about what you saw when recovering the files?

The sony handycam hard drive could be corrupted, that's why you are not able to access it.

You may try to take out hard disk from Sony handycam, and then connect it to computer as external hard drive, or slave hard disk, you can then try to access it from computer.

If still have problem, you may try method below

hope this helps.
