I have an external harddrive that says its need to be formatted. I would like to recover the files that are on it. Anyone knows how I can fix this?

Solution

ur MBR has corrupted and hence u r seeing the file system as RAW...this happens when the file system cannot access the indexing list headers and therefore unable to read in NTFS format...
now, there are 2 ways to fix this...
either try to repair the MBR which, in my experience is a very tedious and time consuming process and might/might not fix the issue...
or, recover the data and then change the RAW to NTFS before formatting the drive...

this is one of the best softwares out there... http://www.m3datarecovery.com/
but you need to get hold of the full version possible, if u know how...

When hard drives/partitions are encrypted MS Windows will say that. What filesystem was on it? What was you doing last before it came up with that problem? Look here http://html5.litten.com/updated-how-to-fix-external-disk-drive-suddenly-became-raw/ https://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html http://www.partition-tool.com/landing/home-download.htm . Try to keep the partition cause once it is deleted and/or overwritten your chances go down at getting everything back.

this is a step by step instruction... http://www.m3datarecovery.com/data-recovery/online-help...
the method you should be looking for is..."How to recover deleted or lost partition?"....
it is towards the middle of the instruction page...
