IT appears the only way to recover deleted files from a NAS is to pull the physical drive and connect it to a PC. (http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2326607/recover-undelete-nas-drive.html). Is that correct? Is there no software that can look at the drive directly? Can the NAS be connect to the PD directly by an ethernet cable or does the disc have to be pulled?

If Recycle Bin is not an option then to recover deleted files you need access to the unallocated space on the raw NAS data volume. So all disks need to be pulled and connected to a PC. Then the RAID needs to be reassembled. Then recovery software can be used to look for deleted files.

Note that some NAS devices allow direct access via ssh but once connected it can be difficult to perform data recovery tasks.

Be careful not to write any new data to the NAS or your deleted files may be overwritten.

The Seagate drive uses LS/MFT or whatever fool file system Microsoft is using this week. I pulled the HDD and connected it to an old Win7 box and Recuva is chugging away.
The WD drives do use ext3/4 so once Recuva is done, I'm going to crack thier cases and drop those drives into the W7 box and try using Linux Recovery for Windows.
