Hi folks...

I am trying to recover the windows 7 password for my friends Dell Inspiron N5030 laptop. She has a total of 4 user accounts. I found this on the web:

boot to my windows 7 disk, get a dos prompt, then type this:

copy c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe c:\

[enter]

copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe

When I type the first command, it says something like "file not found". I have typed it over and over. So I know it was not a typo.

I see all kinds of software for sale that will recover the password, but I am on the broke side and would like to find a solution with out buying software to do this.

I have two computers at home, but both are now running windows 10. I do have my original Windows 7 disk. My friend has no disk and has no idea what her product ID was.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

As per our forum rules we cannot help you with password recovery on this site. Windows is set up where if you can access the admin account you can reset user passwords from user access control. If you cannot access that account unfortunately there is nothing we can do for you. I will be closing this thread now.
