Recovering Data files on HP Pavilion a1710n

Hello,
I uploaded the sevice pack 2 for Vista. It crashed my system. "No OS files found." It was recommended that I use Ubuntu to recover data files, but I have not been able to get that to work. I need help.

Remove the drive, put it into an external hard drive enclosure, then plug the enclosure into the USB port on a working computer.
