Question Red light flashing for VGA and Boot ?

Hi everyone!
I built a PC but it does not have any display. The problem is not the monitor because it works with numerous other PC's. However, there is red light for VGA and boot, which are the gpu and hdd. I have tried the gpu on other pc's, and it appears to be fine. For the hdd, I put a new one into the built PC, but it still flashed red for boot. I even went and bought the same (new) motherboard to see if it would work, but it still gave the same red lights for VGA and boot. I have no idea how to fix this, PLEASE HELP!

Best regards,
A newbie PC builder

To boot the HDD needs to have an OS installed on it. - New HDD's come blank.

The flashing VGA light probably means you need to install a Graphics card. - Not all processors have one built in which is what the motherboard's ports are for.

To solve this we are going to need some more specs.

  1. What motherboard and processor?
  2. Are you plugging into the monitor ports on the motherboard or your discrete graphics card?
  3. What graphics card?
  4. Where is the light your are indicating located? I am assuming on the motherboard but just wanted to make sure.

Without the info my best guess is that you are plugging into the motherboards video out with a cpu that doesn't have integrated graphics. If you have a discrete video card installed plug directly into the discrete cards output, not the one on the motherboard. You will need to install an OS but you should be getting a POST screen regardless and an error noting no OS found.

Many times, especially it seems on asus boards, you'll get the VGA error with a brand new setup. Most times this can be rectified by putting the gpu temporarily into the lower pcie slot. This is chipset controlled, the upper slot is cpu pcie lanes. Going through the chipset for the initial seems to allow bios to register the gpu. It can be moved back to the primary slot afterwards.

Hi Karadjgne!
Thank you for response, so I do have a gpu, and I probably should have put a parts list. Its an rx 570, and shouldn't the hdd be able to boot into bios at least? Also I have attempted to boot it up with a hdd installed with windows already, but it has not worked.

Hi sorry!
I do have a gpu and i am plugging in a hdmi into a monitor from my gpu to the monitor. I am aware that my cpu has no integrated graphics, and I will send a link of my pc parts. ALSO I am not getting any post screen image, it just does not display anything

Hi this is actually a really good point because the gpu does work on other motherboards. However we cannot physically put the gpu onto the lower slot and that may be due to the case since it has the psu blocking the gpu from fitting into the lower pcie slot. I do have an asrock motherboard and I will send a parts list.

@Ethodawg - HI! did you ever find a solution? I have a near identical issue which i have described in detail here
I have attempted every physical test and hardware repair i can think of, i have already tried the lower PCIE slot and for me it made no difference, i am now looking into if it could be a driver or bios issue but I'm having to learn as i go, so any help appreciated.
