My gripe is reading about reddit content somewhere else, or hearing about it on youtube, only to find out that mods deleted all of it to quell some "flame war". Just gone. Dead links, no more reference to something that was going on within a community.

I agree with the official policies being laid out, I just hope mods don't go overboard and delete content because of their own bias or to "save a buddy".

Witcher reddit is the best I have to say though! 😉

Well, I guess that will be the end of Reddit. This new 'policy' sure looks decent, the problem however is that what will be judged as offensive and harassing or whatever is rather arbitrary and will be removed accordingly. That's why we now see posts and threads being mysteriously removed from that website. Anything that goes against their political agenda will be labeled as 'offensive' and removed immediately.

And to add to that, there are so many different political agendas among all of those who can delete that it's going to be very hard to post anything other than pictures of cats. I'm a mod of a smaller sub and I very seldom need to delete anything other than blatant spam. Why? Because the users do a very good job of policing the site themselves. Most of the time I don't even need to delete spam because it gets down voted so fast and so hard that Reddit's auto-filters delete it before I even see it.

"Posts that are illegal for Reddit to host, such as copyrighted materials."

Uh huh. How did that work out for Digg, exactly? And what about images? Users can now only post images they own the rights to or stock photos? Half the site is built on users posting copyrighted material.

The harassment rule is going to bring in a lot of trouble. That's a very broad and subjective rule, and it's only a matter of time before unpopular speech starts being censored.

Anyone working on a solid reddit alternative? Cause there's a huge community ready to jump ship and make you rich off ad dollars.

Seems reasonable enough for me.

Yes, to me too. I am relieved that the word "offensive" has been omitted from the rules because I'm inevitably going to be seen as offensive to anyone holding authoritarian or destructive ideas be they religious or secular.

Releasing anyone's private information such as addresses or personal contact information.
There will be no tolerance for anyone who posts anything calling for violence or harm.

seems to me all political content will be affected, sorry people, no more revolutions, no more fighting corruption in your government, no community organization outside of the prying eyes of big brother.

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
George Mason
Co-author of the Second Amendment
during Virginia's Convention to Ratify the Constitution, 1788

"A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves …"
Richard Henry Lee
writing in Letters from the Federal Farmer to the Republic, Letter XVIII, May, 1788.

"The people are not to be disarmed of their weapons. They are left in full posession of them."

"… the people are confirmed by the next article in their right to keep and bear their private arms"
Philadelphia Federal Gazette
June 18, 1789, Pg. 2, Col. 2
Article on the Bill of Rights

"And that the said Constitution be never construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the Press, or the rights of Conscience; or to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms; …"
Samuel Adams
quoted in the Philadelphia Independent Gazetteer, August 20, 1789, "Propositions submitted to the Convention of this State"

The Founding Fathers on Arms

"Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence … from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable … the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference — they deserve a place of honor with all that's good."
George Washington
First President of the United States

"The supposed quietude of a good man allures the ruffian; while on the other hand arms, like laws, discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as property. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay them aside … Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them."
Thomas Paine

"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them."
Richard Henry Lee
American Statesman, 1788

"The great object is that every man be armed." and "Everyone who is able may have a gun."
Patrick Henry
American Patriot

"Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?"
Patrick Henry
American Patriot

"Those who hammer their guns into plowshares will plow for those who do not."
Thomas Jefferson
Third President of the United States

"The constitutions of most of our States assert that all power is inherent in the people; that … it is their right and duty to be at all times armed; … "
Thomas Jefferson
letter to Justice John Cartwright, June 5, 1824. ME 16:45.

"The best we can help for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed."
Alexander Hamilton
The Federalist Papers at 184-8

The Founding Fathers on Maintaining Freedom

"The greatest danger to American freedom is a government that ignores the Constitution."
Thomas Jefferson
Third President of the United States

"There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters. "
Noah Webster
American Lexicographer

"The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion."
Edmund Burke
British Statesman, 1784

"What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms."
Thomas Jefferson
to James Madison

"They that give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
Ben Franklin
American Statesman

Later Quotes on Gun Control

"The ruling class doesn't care about public safety. Having made it very difficult for States and localities to police themselves, having left ordinary citizens with no choice but to protect themselves as best they can, they now try to take our guns away. In fact they blame us and our guns for crime. This is so wrong that it cannot be an honest mistake."
Malcolm Wallop
former U.S. Sen. (R-WY)

"An armed man is a citizen. A disarmed man is a subject."
Anon.
Seen on a bumper sticker

Pro Gun Control

"Our main agenda is to have all guns banned. We must use whatever means possible. It doesn't matter if you have to distort the facts or even lie. Our task of creating a socialist America can only succeed when those who would resist us have been totally disarmed."
Sara Brady
Chairman, Handgun Control Inc, to Senator Howard Metzenbaum
The National Educator, January 1994, Page 3.

"If you wish the sympathy of the broad masses, you must tell them the crudest and most stupid things."

"This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!"
Adolph Hitler
Chancellor, Germany, 1933

"Never do your foe a minor injury." -- Machiavelli

That's all good and fine, but what does the USA's right to bare arms have to do with Reddit saying you can't post content infringing on the privacy rights of others or calling for violent action? Reddit isn't calling for disarming or anything, nor even against the use of weapons... They're just saying they don't want people posting things that say people should attack other people. We're not in a state of open war against a fascist regime atm so what's the problem?

I think he is trying to refer to how regimes with a negative agenda ban communication and information as a way to control the population. So when a open forum for discussion for anything is shutdown, the argument that the government is trying to control us is brought out, much like tinfoil. Its a stupid argument that works anywhere and anytime.

Reddit put this upon themselves. They were given free reign and thought rules that apply to other websites did not apply to them.

You bring down one enemy, and they find someone even worse to replace him. - General Shepard, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

The is only one True Shepard, and is is a Commander.

But on a more serious note, The thing about a place like reddit is that it is famous and loved because you CAN post anything.
Because of that, people learn tolerance, and learn to be gentle when touching on sensitive topics (because other way the community will strike back).

By setting a rule of: "You CANT do this" they are also saying (even if they dont mean it) but everything else is allowed.

Its kinda like in Tax law, you know? If you are evading taxes the right way, you are a good capitalist.
If you eveade them in the wrong way a, you are a criminal.

Same here. It will backfire, eventually.

I honestly don't see a problem with a rule that says shitty people cant post stuff. I'm never gonna post to go kill someone or harass someone on reddit. I feel like the only people affected by these rules are people that shouldn't be allowed to be on the internet anyway. maybe im wrong?

The trouble is who gets to decide which people are shitty and how liberally that is applied. Even if at first it's only applied to extreme and violent speech, it's only a matter of time before it's used to censor unpopular speech. We've seen it time and time again throughout history, both on and off the net. It's human nature.

When you have the ability to ban, you start getting really aggressive with it surprisingly fast. It's the law of the instrument: if all you have is a hammer, everything begins to look like a nail.

I definitely get where youre coming from. and I 100% see how censoring can get out of hand. I think im just coming from a view that I don't need the internet to spread things that need to be censored. I love reddit, but I use it to look at funny stuff or read about computer issues and fixes.

I think I need to talk to someone who is actually affected by this ban.. . Maybe it isn't just shitty people
