I am having a challenge reformatting the HD for a clean re-install of Win.
XP Home SP2. I placed the Win. XP SP2 cd in the drive and booted up the
system. Screen 1 came up (Windows Setup) & I pressed enter. Screen 2 came up
and all the various items loaded ok. Before screen 3 came up the system had
total shutdown with all loss of power-it crashed.
Upon reboot a black screen came up with this information. Select operating
system to start. (1) Win. XP Home Edition or (2) MS Win. XP setup. Selecting
option (2) MS Win. XP setup brings up a black screen with this message on it.
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system 32\ hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.
Can you please advise on how to do this so I can reformat and re-install
the OS.

Thank you for your reply. The site you mentioned is a very good one-In fact
that is where I started from-printing the instructions to follow. However I
cannot get past the second step in the reformatting process due to this
missing file challange & shutdown situation. I need to get it corrected
first. Hopefully someone can help me with this.

XYZ
The problem you're experiencing may go beyond merely reinstalling the OS.
From your description of the problem, it sounds like it may be a hardware
problem, possibly a failing (or failed) HD. One of the first things you
should do at this stage is to download a diagnostic utility from the
manufacturer of your HD. Virtually every manuf. provides this type of
utility which will (usually) tell you whether your HD is defective.

I think you also mentioned that the computer's power shuts down shortly
after you power up. This might also indicate a failing power supply.
Unfortunately the only definitive way to tell if that's the case is to
substitute a known working PS.

Had you previously tried a Repair install of XP before deciding on a fresh
install?

1st the system info.
Win. XP SP2 Home-5 mo. old (Apr. 05)updates are current.

This might also indicate a failing power supply.
replaced the TigerPro 300W power supply with a ATX Intel P4 450W unit just
to insure it was strong enough. May 05
Programs installed.
MS Works Suite 2005 w/Word 2002
ZA Pro 5.5.094
AdAware SE (Current)
AVG 7.0 (current)
iespyad
NTREGOPT
ERUNT
CWShredder

I used ERUNT to reset registry to a earlier setting however I had
previously deleated all known good backup files as I updated the ERUNT &
NTREGOPT programs so that did not work.

I found this site to (I think)download the hard drive testing program. The
hard drive is a Western Digital WD400BB-00JHA0-according to BeLarc Advisor.
http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?cxml=n&pid=4&swid=3
Can you conferm this as being the correct download-I am 99% sure it is.

The power failure is only when the system crashes-all other times it works
fine.

I cannot run a scann for virus as the system crashes each time I try. I
have tried seversl different restore dates to no avail.
I have tried uninstalling different applications in different combinations
all to no avail. If you need more info I will be glad to provide it.
Had you previously tried a Repair install of XP before deciding on a fresh
> install? I cannot get to the repair or new install options section as that is where the system crashes and I get the file missing or corrupt message.
Thanks for your replies.

Hello XYZ

Check with the motherboard manufacture for a BIOS/Firmware update.

Getting past point may require a BIOS/Firmware update.

Let me know how it turns out.
