Reformat questions regarding Win8.1

Hey all, I'd like to reinstall Windows but I'm not sure how to go about it again. Can I use a key finder to find my key, then install a version of Windows on a disc( of course the same version on my pc) and then boot via disk and use that same key to reinstall? Windows 8 did not come with my of I had manually installed it but no longer have the key or disc I used with it previously. So is hat the easiest way? Also, i get an error saying that there is missing media and Microsoft recovery will find that for me? So I can't do that refresh either, will booting from a disc with Windows on it solve that problem?
