I have a geforce 3 and a NEC fe950+. I get great refresh rates on 2d(like over 100hz on 1024x768) but once i start playing games, my refresh rates plummet. Is this normal? I get only like 65hz in games, and the lower res i go, the les hz i get. I'm running win2kpro.

anyone help me on this?

I have heard of a refresh issue with the det drivers and specifically win2k, I think there is a fix but I am unsure where to find it, does anyone have any ideas?

When opening an OpenGL (and I believe directX) window, the default refresh rate will go to 60hz. If you want to change this, the game you are playing will have to set it itself.

In serious sam for example you will find the setting under "advanced options", "advanced rendering options" near the last page.

In quake III arena, the console command is /r_displayrefresh X.

Mind you there is no sanity check on this so you can easily set the refresh rate beyond your smoking monitors capabilities.

have you tryed to set you rate ? it is easy to do all you need is to go to the advance tab under properites of your monitor in your adapter setting in device manager and change it to the highest setting

That won't affect D3D. But if the Display Properties allows you to set the monitor at a refresh that is too high, you could fry the unit. So ... that might not be the best suggestion.

Usually games use the default desktop refresh rate but there is a caveat. It's the refresh rate when the desktop is at the same resolution as the game.

Try this. Go into display manager and change the change the resolution followed but the refresh rate and save the settings. For example, if your normal desktop is 1024x768, change it to 800x600. (Almost forgot) change the color level to the appropriate one 16-bit or 32-bit, as well. Now, change the refresh rate to the one you prefer.

After you do this you can switch your display settings back to your preferred desktop because you have now established the default setting for other resolutions.

Any game that now uses 800x600 with the color level you chose should also now use the correct refresh rate. If it doesn't, then as someone else mentioned, the game is overiding the default Windows settings. You will have to manually set the setting you want in such a game.
