Technical: Win7 ultimate is installed on a SSD, data and software is on Caviar Black. Ubuntu is installed on a partition on Caviar Green.
Mobo and CPU: ASUS P6X58D Premium; i7-930

Issue: While playing Deus Ex, crash to the blue error screen occurred. After restarting, in regular start up it gets to the Windows logo shimmering and "starting up" and hangs up there, logo is still animated. In the safe mode it hangs up during loading after a few seconds. I have also tried booting up into Ubuntu installed on a separate drive and that always gives me a black screen. With F8 pressed and selecting "Repair PC" it gets to the default 600x400 blue wallpaper and hangs up there, mouse is movable but nothing else pops up. Using the repair from the install disk, on the window where it shows the HD with the OS it "thinks" with mouse pointer being the rotating halo and does not move from there.

Since Ubuntu also fails to start up, I'm afraid that one of the components not working correctly, rather than having software issues. If I attempt to reinstall OS on SSD, will the data on Caviar Black still be functional?

If we ignore the Ubuntu issues and assume that this is a pure, single boot Win 7: what should I try that I have not yet tried?

Thank you

I'd suggest doing what's called an "in-place installation" of Windows 7-- essentially installing Windows 7 over your old Windows 7 on the SSD. This will not affect your data installed on the Caviar Black.

When you say Ubuntu fails to start, are you sure that you have the disc it's installed on set to the primary hard drive in your BIOS?

I was very close to doing this, but it finally fixed...itself.

Here are a few things that I've tried that might or might not have helped: 1) Tried disconnecting all other HDs beyond the SSD. Interestingly enough, during boot up, it did not see the HD and did not boot (Either I screwed something in the bios or during OS install). With my data drive in and linux drive out, it had some issues in finding drives again, bringing up grub's terminal. Still got stuck in loading Win7.
2) Put in Ubuntu disk and ran it from the disk to look for drives (hoped to make an image before reformatting). Did not find my data drive.
3) Restarted and tried safe mode again, it loaded. I've ran avg and booted up normally after it was done.

Haha, that's quite odd! I'm glad you got this all sorted out!
