You don't need to take a course to build a PC, there are plenty of guides and videos online that can help and the majority of people I know that build computer systems have no IT backround.

UPDATE: Experimenting with PCPartpicker.com is always fun and gives you a good idea of which parts are compatible and pricing on parts. Its also a great way to get build ideas before buying a system.
