Registry key for DVD-RW is corrupted - listed 5+ times in registry. Cannot delete any get windows error "error while deleting key...." Tried taking Everyone and Admin ownership. Same. Thought about opening backup copy of reg, editing, reimporting. Such a mess would'nt know where to begin. Any suggestions on how to remove?

Thanks for any assist - Chobe

Do NOT, repeat NOT screw with permissions for the Registry. That path can lead to a full OS reinstall.

So....what is actually wrong with the optical drive?
I first notice a problem with reading any CD. There was a suggestion to remove the upper and lower filters from the following Reg Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e967-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}. In the registry, I notice it was listed about 20+ times and of each of the keys, only one had the named upper and lower filters. This particular key was also the most complete so tried deleting the others and got the error while deleting message, This was true of all the keys ecept the one I presumed to be correct.

The CD no longer registers in file manager, device manager says working OK

@chobe ,

Do you have a system restore point that you could use to restore the registry to a point before you made the changes?

If not, do you have a backup from before the registry changes?

I have to agree with @USAFRet ! "Permissions" are highly complex. Messing with them is downright dangerous to the health of your computer OS.

Good luck. Have a great day.

Phil
