My nephew is going to buy a computer in September. I wanted to know could a
Dell 700T with 384MB of RAM run Windows XP, surf the net a little longer
and view e-mail. I am planning to put in a new HD to replace the old 20GB.
Should I recycle this box on send it to the recycle bin.
Thanks,
Carolyn

Not only is it plenty useful, but there are lots of charities that will
glandly take the system off your hands. No reason to scrap it.

Carolyn,

700MHz is adequate for running Windows XP. So is 384MB, cosidering that most
name brand manufacturers (Dell, IBM, Gateway, HP) are selling their low end
systems with a measly 128MB. If the 20GB drive is still giving good service,
why not ADD another drive, rather than replacing it?

Your major outlay to run XP Home is the $90 store price for it. Compare that
with sticker prices on new entry-level computers in the 2.4+GHz range at around
$400. The way that Microsoft has structured its deals with major OEM name brand
companies with XP factory installed accounting for a small fraction of the total
"manufacturing" cost, both Microsoft and the OEMs want to create the incentive
for you to replace rather than upgrade. As always, the decision depends on the
color and abundance of money... Ben Myers

Carolyn:

The Dell 700T should be fine for awhile.

My Dell C400 only has a PIII 800 CPU with 384 MB of RAM.
It works great for web browsing and email via Win XP Pro SP2.
(it also works great as a demo/field unit for Win2k3 server and SBS2k3
server)

I agree. I have among our machines an XPS T 500mhz with 512mb RAM running
WinXP home and it is rock solid. For the uses you've mentioned, it should
do very well.

We've been in an interesting bunch of years here. Several year old
computers are still "plenty fast enough" for most things current. Amazing.
