reinstall a new op sys

Solution
Sure, but you will need to buy a new install disk/key. There are a number of highly rated sellers on EBay that have some pretty low prices on install media with key.

There might actually be another method. You said this was a laptop with Windows 7 PRO? Did it ship with that OS or was it upgraded later by the previous owner? If it shipped with another OS, what was it? It there a COA sticker on the system somewhere? What operating system do you wish to install?

Run the free Belarc Advisor from HERE to see if it will retrieve your Windows 7 key. If that key matches your install disk (and you are sure that it is a full install disk) you could do a clean reinstallation.

If your disk is actually a Samsung recovery disk, you may be able to restore your computer to the original state using the disk and the restore partition.

Also, if it is actually running Win 7 Pro (retail) and you can retrieve the key, you could download a new image of Win 7 Pro from Microsoft for free HERE, but do the download with your key first to insure that it is a supported key and not OEM or black market.

hi RealBeast,
I'm afraid there are no disks rescue or otherwise of any sort. The disk I have is for my desktop.mine is a genuine win7
home disk for which I have the key etc. but I understand that I can put the win7 home version on if I get rid of the partitions with the win7 pro on?
thanks for bearing with me on this.
all help gratefully received and needed

Okay, so you have no disks for Win 7 Pro. It is probably an OEM version since the disk drive has a restore partition anyway.

Yes, if you have a Windows 7 HP disk and key you can install that on the machine if you haven't used it before. To install the Home Premium version, start up from the disk and select custom install, then delete all the existing partitions on the drive and select to install to the single remaining unpartitioned space. That will give you all the room that the disk has, Windows will create the system reserved partition and then do the install to the remaining space as the C drive. After that you will need to install all the drivers for the computer, which you can get from the manufacturer support web site. Then you will need to do all the Windows updates. After that all gets done you can activate with your key online.

If you have already used the Home Premium to install on another computer, you will have to buy another copy, and as I noted before the best prices are on EBay -- just be sure to use a vendor that has a lot of positive reviews to insure that they are legitimate.

HI Realbeast,
firstly I do not know how to do a factory restore but mainly with the win7 pro I find
there is bits I will never use and yes I have used the Windows 7 Home Premium to install on the desktop.
although I am retired I do odd hours with some charity work so if it takes a while for me to answer any
e-mails I apologise.
thanks again nebleehk

Since you have already used that Windows 7 Home Premium key, you cannot use it again -- you need to buy another.

I would try a factory reset on the laptop, which is very similar to doing a clean reinstallation. It will erase all user files (so back up anything that you want) and restore it to new condition. There are YouTube videos that show how, but basically you just tap the F4 key repeatedly during the start up when the Samsung logo is showing. It should enter the restoration mode and then just choose complete restore and let it run until done -- and have it plugged in so that the battery does not run out during the process.

Although it has required some digging, my understanding is that the laptop comes with Windows 7 Pro (so OEM) and no media, and that he used the Windows 7 Home Premium disk/key to install Windows on his desktop already.
