reinstall windows vista?

Out of the blue, I can't get on, and it says I have to reinstall windows vista. I don't want to lose my files etc--what do I do?

Thank you! But a CD did not come with this compaq presario; -it came with vista already on it..how would i do that? Thank you.

Windows Vista does not contain a Recovery Console, you'd need to access the Compaq Recovery option in the Start Menu, try accessing it in Safe Mode
