I reinstalled windows 10 on a new motherboard and since then my second monitor no longer works. I have a VGA monitor which is plugged into the HDMI of my GTX1070 with a converter. It used to work before I reinstalled windows 10. Now my second monitor doesn't even show up in Device Manager anymore.

Old hardware:
CPU i7 950
Mobo ASUS P6x580-E
New hardware:
CPU i7 6700k
Mobo ASUS Prime Z270P

The rest stayed the same.

I installed windows from windows 7 CD with the upgrade ISO from the microsoft website.

Things I have already tried:
- other monitor
- other VGA-HDMI converter
- other HDMI slots in my GPU
- I tried to install VGA drivers but it gives an error saying my system is incompatible

Dual monitor problem most likely be that the drivers haven't been installed properly and using Win10s generic driver.

Use custom search at Geforce.com drivers page

Driver compatibility issue might be the result of trying to install a driver for a different gpu or bit version.

Enter the fields

*10 series
*Gtx 1070
*Win 10 32Bit or 64Bit

Double check which Windows bit version is installed. Type dxdiag in start search bar.

Next time you need to reinstall Win10, create an install using Windows media creation tool to setup a dvd or usb stick instead of going the long way around of reinstalling Win7.

Tutorial on Win10 media creation tool and also a link down the bottom how to go about a motherboard change and showing you how to link your digital licence to an Ms account so you can change hardware and still able to activate. Only possible for retail and personal OEM versions of Windows, not for corporate OEMs such as HP or Dell where you can't carry this licence to another motherboard/system.

Thanks for the reply!

I had already tried manually installing the drivers. No success. It says the VGA drivers are incomatible (because I don't have a VGA port?) I have installed all other drivers though.

[Edit] The error code from the VGA drivers is: This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software.
Note that my windows is 64 bit, and I did download the 64 bit drivers.

The reason I installed windows 7 first, is because the activation code doesn't work for windows 10. But I have a feeling this is not the cause of the problem, since it used to work this way before.

The vga error is puzzling but shouldn't happen if download the correct driver for your os and gpu. That's why i asked to check bit version just in case 32bit was installed by accident.

If activation code you mean by serial key, Win7 key wont register with Win10's install but you can skip the sections it asks for a key and if your applicable for activation it will do so online. Since you've already activated online with Win7 key upgraded to Win10, this key has been hashed already on MS's servers. An MS account was all you needed to reactivate on different hardware.

Very helpful information! Do you reckon installing windows 10 at once will fix this issue though? I have kind of already reinstalled 10 times this year due to other hardware issues...
