hi,

is it possible to reinstall windows ME in an ME/XP dual boot system, when booting from the CD? For reasons too long-winded to go into, I can't do this in the windows environment.

Will it get rid of the dual-boot and if so can I easily get it back without also reinstalling XP?

thanks,

I have a dual boot Vista/XP on seperate hard drives. I have screwed up the boot sector and did a repair of xp and restored the boot files successfully. If you have the dual boot on a single hard drive, I'm not entirely sure. I would think you would have to reformat the entire HD to install an operating system, but I'm not sure about that. Repairing with the OS CD might work though.

For install dual boot in a system is easier install win ME first and second install winXP, and you mus format the HD and create a partition for respective OS.

As far as I am aware, the only file you would have to change is "boot.ini"

Before you do anything.

boot up the os that's in c partition. Then in explorer you must set it to show hidden files and protected operating system files

then go to the root of your C:\ drive and make a backup of the boot.ini to a floppy disk or memory stick or even on your D:\ partition. (as this version will be setup for dual boot)

Then reformat ME on C:\ partition . then show hidden files and op system files again then copy over the boot.ini with your backed up one which will overwrite the existing file.

Hide the system folders and system files in explorer. then reboot.

DISCLAIMER : I read how to do this seven years ago, but never tried it myself.
