In preparation for the AMD Zen chips and motherboards i've been trying to get a backup of files and such because i've heard that the motherboard replacement requires a fresh os install (Which I don't get because me and a buddy replaced his micro atx board to a full atx and it ran just fine but better safe than sorry.) My issue is i don't have a physical win10 copy but a win 7 copy minus the activation code =(. I'd love to create a install for win 10 on a flashdrive or a recovery setup to reinstall the OS if possible then i don't have to spend money on a OS or code and can get a nice high end gigabyte am4 board when they come out.

So i ask what are the options when it comes to alternatives to reinstalling my OS without re buying the OS

Unless you're talking about a retail license key, your current windows license will not activate. If you replace the motherboard, you will be required to purchase a new Windows license. It's not an extra cost. It IS the cost of building your own computer.

If you just replace mobo then most likely Window 10 will work when reinstalling (with activation). It will not work if you replace all components. Maybe handy if you have the key written down just in case but Windows will connect with the Internet to verify anyway.

it's going to be the mobo cpu and then the ram ofcourse the new boards won't support the ddr3 so i gotta get ddr4

You are going to get a new copy of Windows then. I am not sure if you can just replace mobo and activate Windows and then replace the rest component. Try?

if the new socket is compatible back to AM3+ then maybe i could just replace the mobo at first then the cpu and do it slowly but as it seems its going to be board cpu and ram everything else is gonna be the same
