I bought an HP laptop back in 2011 and its started to run slow. I want to know if i can reinstall windows 7 on it so that everything will be deleted and it will be back to its factory state. I used Magic Jellybean keyfinder to find my windows product key so i have that in hand. I do not have, however, an install disk since HP did not include one when i bought this computer. I'v seen on the web that you can make a bootable flash drive but i'm not sure how to do this and how much space the flash drive needs. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

1. You need an Windows 7 Home prem ISO (image file)
2. USB (recommended at least 8GB/16GB)
3. Software to put ISO on USB "Windows 7 DVD Tool" - On Microsoft's site
4. Boot from USB and install
5. Insert Product key
6. Enjoy =)

^This is what I am talking about in my above post.. Tap F11 at power on or you can access it from windows as well as long as it still has it's original windows installation and no one deleted the backup partition or data..

Really ? is that an HP (major OEM like Dell / HP) thing.... I have done it dozens of times on both lappies and desktops, every one of them w/ a OEM license ... never had any other kind.

Recently did it in S-I-L's lappie ... a Sony i think.

I spend a good amount of time "cleaning" or reloading the OS for people's store bought computers. Major offender over the years have been pe-loaded AV "trial" programs where when the free period end, 30 days later, ya look in Task manager and the AV is using 99% of CPU time 24/7. Most of the time I just uninstall everything but usually requires some registry edits and even some "cleaner" work. When done, system is much more responsive.

Must be a bulk licensing thing. Vendors make a ton of money pre-loading that crap ... if it's easy then those peeps writing the checks wouldn't be getting their money's worth and, to be fair, TS would have Grandma calling up yelling at them that she ain't Miss Daisy and doesn't need a driver. :)

My step mom has had a lappie for 2 years and she hasn't gotten past Solitaire yet.

In the ole days, I'd just use Belarc Advisor to record all the software licenses / product key'son a box and then, when someone dropped off a desktop / laptop reinstall everything for install media I had in the office

I think I have a copy of install media for every copy of Windows that I thought worth having at some point in time as well as DOS 3.1 and 6.2

W4WGs
Win NT 4
Win 98 (didn't like it but wasn't going to put NT on kids boxes)
Win 2k
Win XP
Win 7

Never bothered with the ones that didn't bring anything to the table.

Win 95 (40% slower than W4WGs)
Win ME
Vista
Win 8

I just retired a Wang APC (8088) on DOS and a NT4 box went to Valhall 2 years ago... and have machines w/ Win2k that I tun on once a year just to see if still working.

Belarc Advisor has been one of my 'go to' tools for geez... gotta be almost 20 years ... all the install media for all our stuff is around here somewhere but with employees in the office and kids at home never putting anything away, I can keep a record of every piece of software on a single piece of paper(or text file) for each box
