Reinstalling Windows after mobo upgrade

I am interested in reinstalling Windows after upgrading my motherboard. I didn't remove my licence (Retail as far as i know) before upgrading. What happens now if i format my SSD and reinstall Windows. Will i be able to use my old key again or will it be invalid?

If you didn't deregister the old installation first you may have to call Microsoft and have them switch the registration over. Of course this is predicated upon you actually having a retail version, and not OEM.

If it is an actual Retail license, then you should be OK after installing on the new hardware.

If it chokes at accepting the license key or fails activation, you'll have to call MS.
Either the phone robot or talk to a human.
