I've been lurking in this newsgroup trying to find some information
for a client, and I noticed several threads about reinstalling
Windows ME.
Is it possible to install Windows ME (without any install CDs)
on a computer if the computer already has ME installed,
and some of the CD's files are copied tothe original
Windows ME hard disk?

Thank you

When Win ME installs it copies the installation files to
C:\Windows\Options\........ and then the Install subfolder if a retail copy
and the Cabs subfolder if an oem copy. D-click Setup.exe in there and
(re-)installation will begin.

You can burn the particular subfolder to cd and you then have a ME cd. If
there's a msbatch.inf file (or possibly msbatch.exp) this will cause an oem
customised installation, while renaming it/them, eg to msbatch.txt, will
give full interaction, as though a retail copy.

If you've seen sevral threads about reinstalling Win ME you'll know you have
first to remove - one way or another - if installed, Internet Explore 6.0,
or a non-functional mix of versions will result, and rename wmploc.dll if
WMP 9 is installed, or setup fails with a verx.dll error.

Dick,

It MAY be possible.

Boot to a command prompt using a startup floppy and then run one of these
commands

C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\setup.exe

or

C:\Windows\Options\Install\setup.exe

If successful, you may be asked for the product key.

Boot to a command prompt using the startup floppy and at the A:\> prompt
type exactly this:

C:\Windows\Command\Find /I "ProductKey" C:\Windows\System.dat

The first line of the screen dump will look like this:

ProductKey XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

where the X's are your actual CD Key that will be used to reinstall.

To create a startup floppy go to Add/Remove Programs > Startup disk tab and
follow the prompts.

Any working PC with Win98 or ME can be used.

Zee
