Hey, I'm fixing an ASUS Eee PC 900SD netbook for someone, and XP needs to be reinstalled. Already wiped the drive, and the recovery partition was gone when I got it. When running a (legit) XP Iso off of my USB flash drive, I get a message saying "hat.dll is missing or corrupt". Not sure what is wrong, I would appreciate any help!

p.s. I read somewhere that it might be because I need the SATA controller driver; however, that usually had a different error (can't find drive error) which I am not having. If that might be the problem, I might need help finding that driver for this chipset. Thanks!

Sounds reasonable. Where in the installation files does it belong? Also, a reputable download source for the hal.dll would be helpful, as I have tried TWO XP ISO's from different CD's and they both have the same error! The ISO also works fine on this laptop I am typing on.

I also just noticed that before the hal.dll error it quickly flashes "invalid boot.ini. booting from c:/windows". So for some reason it's never booting from the USB? No boot.ini in the USB, but I heard it is formed during installation. Thanks.

EDIT: The ISO does NOT work fine on this laptop. It works when I run setup.exe (on the XP USB) from inside my working Windows 7, but has the same error on booting fromUSB! Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks! Turns out the iso writing (to usb) program I was using was the problem. I used WinToFlash instead and it worked fine! Sorry for taking your time!
