Relatively Low scores and fps with 1080 ti

Hi,

my specs:

core i5 4690 at 3.5 (boost 3.9)
gygabyte h97
16 Gb ram
msi aero 1080 ti factory OC (1520 MHz)
Acer monitor p243w at 1200p

I know the CPU -GPU seems mismatched. The reason is I got the card as a present, quite unexpectedly.

i just installed the GPU and did some testing and gaming and I have to say I am a bit disappointed by the fps and scores I got at 1200p

unigine heaven everything ultra at 1200p: 3323
firestrike 1200p: 16458 ( graphics 28420, physics 7185)
Mass Effect Andromeda 1200p: 120-150fps in the vault, 60-110fps on EOS surface.
Doom2016: 120-160fps


i noticed my CPU load:
very low for heaven,
close to 100% for fire strike physics test, quite low for the rest
100% for andromeda when the area loads, then goes down to 60-70%

I base my comparison on reviews of the 1080ti FE at 1080p from specialized sites. Does my 1200p justify the difference?

Is my Core i5 slowing my pc down that much? I know I sound picky but it is hard not to be a bit disappointed.

A friend has offered to sell me his core i7 7700 and mobo for a really low price. Would that bring the scores and fps closer to their top?

i was hoping to buy a gsync 4k monitor later, would the core i5 be less of a bottleneck then?

Your CPU is probably causing bottleneck with you're trying to play really high graphics and all filters activated, try to test the games not at the benchmarks, but how smooth they feel while playing, and leave MSI afterburner on the background. If you feel that the game stuttered, check MSI to see if the lag spike/stutter happen at the same time your CPU reaches 100%. If so than you have a legit bottleneck.
Those are procedures you gotta do before spending money, although I believe the results you got were expected and very good. But if you're not satisfied, the I7 7700 will definitely increase your performance.

You are right. I checked not only the CPU usage but also the graph. There are indeed frequent spikes at 100%.
But do you think this right will get good fps (45-60) at 4k with a gsync monitor? It is my understanding that 4k is overwhelmingly dependent on gpu, not CPU. Correct?

cpu load is unaffected, its just that its so gpu demanding that becomes the bottleneck

I can't tell you how this system will run at 4K, it all depends on what you're playing.
Yes, resolution depends more on the GPU, but it still takes some of the CPU,so if you're getting a 4K monitor, your CPU usage will increase.



If you want to get a higher resolution and increase CPU usage as minimal as you can, you gotta do a upper scale. In BF1 for example in my 1600x900 monitor I can play at any above that till 3200x1800 due to a tool that I can upper scale
