Hi,

It was rumored that Relentless Rats (today's preview) would have
supertype 'Basic'. Any ideas why it doesn't?

Because they'd have to put the reminder text on the card anyway.

1)Because its not a land.
2)The type "Basic Creature" would cause much more doubts that the simple
ruletext.
3)Other reason is the golden rule. (The rules take precedence unless
otherwise declared in the card's rule text. note "rule text" and not
"type" )

True, but I'd still find it more elegant rulewise.

Um, because it's not a land, perhaps? Making it a "Basic Creature" wouldn't
do anything extra towards overriding the rule that exempts basic -land- cards
only...

Basic is a supertype, it can technically be applied to any card. The
only rule that would need to be altered is 100.2, and the change would
be rather trivial.

It would cause no more doubts than Artifact Lands or the Echoing cycle
already created.

The golden rule is irrelevant in this instance because Wizards can and
does alter the rules as it sees fit. The definition of the supertype
'Basic' is already written so that it could apply to card types other
than lands, all it needs is to be explicitly stated.

Well, YEAH,
but if they then tweaked the rule to include Basic ANYTHING (including
creatures), that'd be kinda cool.
And elegant.
Admittedly there may be (and probably are) other wackier ramifications of
this change, but it'd still be great to explore.
