News Relive the days of unhinged GPU box artwork — new book catalogs 300 retail boxes with both horrors and delights

Ah, thanks for the reminder. Yes, 90's~10's box art was something.
The box art for games unhinged, but PC part boxes were a whole another frontier of "We need something flashy and catchy, but not something that would get us in trouble with copyright, and we don't have the slightest grasp of how to design or market our brand because our company is too new to this" vibes.

IMO the best? most mature? looking box art came from BFG and EVGA. Very clever use of negative space (art term) that occurred because everyone else was using bright colors.

Chinese / Taiwanese manufacturers seem to be a gold mine for "incredible" box arts. I know because I've come across several GPUs from the likes of Yeston, Maxsun, Galax (KFA?), PowerColor, ELSA, Inno3D, and others with awesome arts, even the more recent products..

The sweet combination of attention grabbing art and questionable English will never cease to amaze me..

Heck, I remember one of my earliest "virtual crushes" growing up was a box art of a Sapphire GPU. That's kind of embarrassing...

I also got the advertisement for the Doom artwork on the Asus card. It made me laugh.

They took the art off of the boxes and put it right on the cards themselves. Now you cannot throw the box art away.

I love how the article says "Remember, the graphics cards in these boxes would sometimes be ‘enhanced’ by equally gaudy artwork on their cooling shrouds. That isn’t very common in 2025" right above a link for an article about the Asus/Bethesda Doom Edition RTX 5080 ROG Astral with gaudy Doom artwork on the cooling shroud!
Lets be honest. The ASUS Doom GPU is done FAR more tastefully than 99% of the god-works from the good ol' days

Yeah, I remember a lot of the 8000 series having some pretty distinctive art, but it ended up on the cards.

Found this gem, which was pretty subtle for the day.

I personally still have this one laying around.
