Reload win 7 from external hard drive backup after hard drive failing

have a recovery file on ext. hard drive for win 7 computer hard drive died after kids dropped laptop fighting.....can i reload from this please explain how to proceed thank you .

Reloading will not help if the disk is bad.

First check the health of the hard disk in the laptop. You may need to do this by physically removing the hard disk and then connecting it to another computer. (You can do this by downloading and running "HDTune" on the drive.
