Remote Assistance Connection Cannot Be Established

Hi,

I'm having a problem setting up Remote Assistance between my own computer
and a friend's computer using Windows Messenger. The invitation is sent from
my friend's computer OK, it is received by my computer and I accept. The
confirmation of the acceptance is displayed in Messenger on my friend's
computer OK and then my computer tries to connect to his. The connection
attempt fails very quickly with the message "A Remote Assistance connection
could not be established. You may want to check for network issues or
determine if the invitation expired or was cancelled by the person who sent
it." Both computers are Windows XP Pro SP2.

I'm setting up the Remote Assistance between the two computers while they
are both attached to my network (the idea being that I will return my
friend's computer when I have set up remote assistance). Both computers have
Norton Internet Security 2005 installed but this problem still occurs even
if NIS is disabled on both machines. MY network router is not logging any
blocked traffic and has UPnP turned on. One machine is connected to the
Router via a wireless network card and the other machine is connected via
ethernet.

Remote Assistance between the two machinees did work the first time I tried
it but has failed in the manner described above ever since.

Does anyone have any ideas or know where else I can look?

Hello,

the problem lies in the fact that the person asking for remote assistance is
behind a router that performs NAT translation.

That means that the real IP adres of his computer is probably in the form of
192.168.1.100 or some other nonroutable ipadres.

When the request message is sent the ip adres of the sender is contained in
the message. The message is in fact in xml format. So the ip adres in the
message could be changed in the ip adres of the router that is connected to
the internet.
How you should change the message and then start the remote assistance
session I don't know but hopefully this will help.
