I am running WinXP Pro on a home network and want to use the remote assistance feature to connect to a buddy who is also using WinXP Pro on a home network and can't seem to make the connection. What are we doing wrong or what can I check for?

Well since I'm not all that familiar with router and network equipment I don't know, but I can tell you this. Both machines are running WinXP and both are setup to run through Linksys routers. I have disable the standard Windows firewall and set the DMZ on the router to allow this computer direct access to the internet. Does that help any?

You will need to open Port 3389 for TCP traffic on both your Windows XP Systems using any kind of a firewall sofware, as well as on your Linksys router. Generally speaking, you will get accustomed to opening up ports or enabling port triggering on your router depending on what software you are running. Different software and/or services will require you to open/trigger of different port numbers to support different types of communications traffic to your PC (TCP, UDP or BOTH), depending on the application requirements. Again, in this case Remote Assistance requires that Port 3389 be open to TCP traffic.
