Hi Everyone!

I recently got a job as a transcriptionist with an overseas client. The client then instructed me to connect to a remote desktop connection set up. All was well and good until I had to open their player and listen to the audio. The audio was stuttering every now and then and I couldn't understand what was spoken. Then I tried to restart the connection and connected again. This time however, the audio is stopping and playing almost every second. Now I know there will be some delay as we are continents away but would that do that to an audio player? Now I have 3mbps broadband speed and I only have Skype open and the occasional email check. What could I do on my end to lessen the delay or to make it more manageable as I need to understand the speaker to do my work. Thanks!

It may not be possible to fix. The key problem you have with live type feeds is the data errors cannot be retransmitted quickly enough to not notice the issues.

First of course you must have a very clear error free connection. The size of the connection means very little it is the quality that matters. The ping times must be very very consistent. This is called low jitter and it is critical for transmission of live voice or video.

Most likely your issue is with the remote desktop software. This is not designed to pass high quality audio or video. What happens is you get large screen updates or mouse movements and the overhead in doing this causes delays ..ie jitter.. in the audio or video. If you can live with it you may be...

If you can live with it you may be able to reduce the quality of the video and it may decrease the amount of overhead.

The only real solution is to use software that is designed to pass audio and/or video. Something like a conferencing system.

Anyone know a free or even a paid remote desktop software that works fine with a transcription software? or just anything that provides at least an understandable and semi-clear audio quality. I just need it to work side by side an audio player, no video required. Thanks all!
