Remote desktop stopped working

I have been using remote desktop for quite some time without problems.
Suddenly it stopped working, instead giving an error message similar to this
(translated into english):

"The remote desktop has been disconnected

The client could not establish a connection to the remote computer.
Possible causes:
1) Remote connections maybe isn't activated on the remote computer.
2) No more connections can be made to the remote computer.
3) A network error occurred when the connection was about to be established."

However, I have checked the remote computer and connections are indeed
allowed and, as far as I know, there is no upper limit on the number of
connections that you can make to the remote computer. I don't know what could
be a network error though. The internet connection works just fine.
Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem? Also note that I have
checked that TCP port 3389 is allowed to carry traffic through my firewall.

Can you test this over the local LAN at the remote site to see if RD works?

Is it possible the remote PC LAN IP has changed?

Is it possible your calling the incorrect public IP for the remote PC?

Has someone added firewall software to the remote PC?

Did you run this telnet test to see if you can pinpoint the problem?

Thanks Al,

Yes, the answer that it doesn't work comes a little bit too fast, as if
there was network problems at the client.

No. I don't use use DHCP and I have checked that it is the same.

No.

Just tried it. "telnet <myip> 3389" makes the dos prompt completely black
for a minute or two before the prompt comes back again. I'm not sure if this
means that I could connect or not, or what it means if I could.

Do you have further ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks,
Joachim

If it does not work over the local LAN from another PC then its an issue of some sort on the RD host
or the local network.

The troubleshooting section on this page has a few things to look at beyond the obvious of RD not
being enabled.

Is it possible new anti-virus software like Norton 2005 has been installed on the PC your trying to
reach? Norton 2005 Worm Protection is causing issues like this with RD...

Thanks again Al,

I have a strong feeling that it has to be an error on the computer from
which I am connecting to the remote desktop on another computer. The error
screen comes up equally fast independent of which network that I run it from.

Well, I have Norton 2005, but I've had it for quite some time and I haven't
made any changes to it recently.
