Remote desktop

I have Windows XP Pro on my home computer and Windows Vista on my laptop. When I tested out the Remote Desktop connection from my laptop it worked fine. I was in the same room with both computers.
I was in another city and tried to connect and it wouldn't work. I searched for answers online but nothing helped! Could someone tell me what to do? Simple language please because I'm new to this!

It won't work because when you leave your house, you are no longer connected to your network. It would be like trying to open your car trunk when you are sitting in a car 100 miles from yours.

Simplest way to get to your computer remotely is though a web service like www.gotomypc.com. You need to set this all up before you travel though.
