I have been running remote desktop sessions with xp pro on client and host.
When the host is on standby, I can't login from client PC.
After I the remote connection window appears and I type in user and password
info, the entire session minimizes and nothing else happens.
What are my options to bring the host out of stanby? other than going 1500
miles to touch the keyboard.

If the host is no longer touchable from the network after going into
standby, what advice can we give you? Do you have alternative access to the
host--via another machine on a LAN, or via a direct dialup, for example?
Some form of backup--particularly the dialup--can be useful if you need to
be able to maintain contact.

You need to check the power properties and be sure that the nic is set to be
allowed to bring the machine out of standby, and that the drivers are the
latest and greatest. If there are multiple sources for drivers--system
vendor and brand of nic, for example, try both. You are probably best off,
however, disabling standby on this machine. If you really need power
savings, consider wake-on-lan, although I've not tried to work out how to
implement that on a single machine. I think it is possible on a single
machine behind a router--but I've never attempted it.

WOL is about the only way I can think of to bring a machine out of
standby in this type of situation... :(

I second your opinion - if the device is to be a server, don't let it
go to Standby mode... You can enable other PM features to save
energy, but putting it to sleep won't give you desirable results.
