Remote KVM (PC) over LAN?

First off, I don't know where this should go. It's a combination hardware/software/networking question. Mods, do with it what you will.

Long story short: PC is upstairs, TV is downstairs. I want to move the PC (just the PC chassis itself) downstairs for a direct connection to the big-screen for gaming. But, I still want my desk upstairs with access to the PC, to be able to use it as if it were still there sitting next to my desk. Basically, a long-distance KVM (plus sound.. KVMs don't generally carry audio).

I've seen hardware online that appears to do this, in the form of rather expensive little boxes, basically remote KVM stations. Probably more useful for a data center or at least a server rack than what I have in mind. But it also led me to believe I could probably just cobble something together that could do the trick.

What I have in mind is to build a smaller PC to keep at my desk, that could control the actual PC over the LAN, either through the switch or by a direct wired connection into one of the PC's extra LAN ports (I could use it like a management port on a server). On the surface, this sounds pretty simple, I could just use a RDP solution, but I want something that still provides full 1080p/60fps video (if that's even do-able), full screen (no local UI, or at least one that can be switched to full screen), plus audio, with as little lag/latency as possible. With a direct wired connection, that shouldn't (in theory) be out of the question.. two computers with a crossover between gigabit ports should be pretty much instantaneous.

All I really need is generalities.. the things I should keep in mind, I can build the thing myself. I'm guessing this little PC would need a high-speed processor and a fat Ethernet, but not a lot of RAM.. built for speed, not power. Linux-based, of course (the current PC is on Windows 7, incidentally), any distro will do. Are there software packages for Linux that provide this function?

what about using some sort of thin client upstairs ran off the main pc downstairs?

thin clients have mouse + keyboard ports, can hook up to your monitor downstairs via cat5e and already have all of the processing done on that pc downstairs. they are also fairly cheap depending on which model you buy and where. even a pre-owned (used) client perhaps is an option as long as it works.

certainly cheaper than making a computer (which could cost you $300-400 depending on what you buy) and since you already want to do RDP it might fulfil your needs.. anyways just a thought.
