Removal of MSDOS memory resident program

I downloaded a couple of stand alone, freware programs, I tried to get rid of
them but...there was no unistall feature built into the programs and the
programs were not listed under the add/remove program, their web sites
support was 'pay for help'. I dragged the progams into my trash, empited the
trash and restarted. The programs location under properties were listed as
being on my desktop, (not a shortcut on the desktop). Now when I start my
computer in safe mode and right hand click the 'my computer' logo and
go>properties>performace...I get a message that says "Real mode driver or
memory resident program loaded in config.sys or autoexec.bat file" and when I
click for more info I get..."Drive X is using an MS-DOS mode file system, a
driver listed in the Config.sys file" and also "Compatibility mode reduces
overall system performace"...How do I get rid of this program. I am not a
wizkid at computers but I can follow instructions, I could use some help on
how to rid these programs off my computer.

When ya clean ya gotta get in the corners as well...

Start/Run/msconfig.exe (Startup Tab) to clean the stuff out of Windows
Startup, and

edit c:\config.sys, c:\autoexec.bat, c:\msdos.sys with Notepad to remove
stuff from those places (you may have to change the Folder Properties of
C:\; if you can't find those files, uncheck "Hide System Files")... note
that in msdos.sys all those "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX"s are
supposed to be there.

Rick and David thanks for responding...I ran the 'system configuration
utility' but I could not find a edit feature anywhere. I do have my 'show
hidden folders' clicked to see them....I also checked the 'device manager' in
normal mode and there was no yellow exclamation marks there. And I looked
each folder that was there....What else can I check? thanks JILL

CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT are not interpreted in WinME. The OS will only parse the files
for Environmental variables and update the OS accordingly.

You need to look at the Device Manager in normal Mode and remove those items with a yellow
exclamation mak and then reboot the PC. Those devices should Plug 'n Play and reinstall,
hopefully properly.

Did you get rid of these programs that way or are you still being
bothered by them?

These messages are normal and expected when you are running Windows Me
in Safe Mode. Nothing to be worried about.

We are talking about these old DOS programs again?

They cannot be loading via Autoexec.bat or config.sys, at least not in
Windows Me. If they are loading via the Registry, the system.ini
file, or the win.ini file then they should be listed on the Startup
tab of MSCONFIG.

This may take a bit, but please copy all of the items that are listed
on the Startup of MSCONFIG and post that this back here.

That may help us to decipher what is going on.

Here is what I copied

I did a search for files called Config.sys and I found 4 files named
Config.sys One is located at C:\ and was created a couple of days ago when I
did the downloads, there is 0 bytes and it is empty.

The second is located at C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\EBD It has no created date but
says it was modified when I got my computer in 2000 and has 847kb in it. This
is what I copied from notepad:

The third is located C:\program files\rescue disk it was created only a few
days ago but modified 3 years ago (how is that possible)? It has 16kb I
copied this from notepad: device=ifshlp.sys

The fourth one is located in C:\backup and has only 47kb and I copied this
from notepad:

REM [Miscellaneous]


I have 2 Autoexec.bat files, I can't copy and paste the info, what should I
look for in there? 1 file, only says:

Bad command or file name
Not ready reading drive A
Abort,Retry,Fail?


anything in the files that suggest where and what the memory resident
program is? I never had a problem like this before until I used the registry
scan and fix tool. Now my system resoures are low.

That is the "dummy" file automatically created by WindowsMe to satisfy
certain shoddily programmed applications that insist that the file
c:\config.sys does exist.

That is the file that is copied to a 3.5 inch emergency boot diskette
using Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs. The folder name EBD is an
abbrevation for Emergency Boot Diskette and the folder contents are
those files that are put onto the diskette. This file will never be
processed when you boot the computer from the hard drive.

It was created by some application or other. You should be able to
safely delete this entire folder.

This is probably a backup folder created by some installation program.
It is not a standard Windows folder name. Again, I suggest that you
can safely delete the folder and all of its contents.

The only autoexec.bat file that can possibly be processed by Windows
Me when it starts up is the one in the root directory of drive C: If
Windows Me finds such a file when it starts up it will take the
following actions:

1. Process any environment variable settings (SET commands) in the
file and add these to the registry data.
2. Ignore everything repeat everything else in the file
3. Delete the file when it has finished processing it.
4. Create a new, completely empty, autoexec.bat file to replace this
one.

Exactly the same procedures apply to the CONFIG.SYS file.

What tool was this, exactly? Program name?

We can address that one just as soon as we clear up your original
problems.

What exactly are your remaining issues when you startup Windows Me
normally? Please include the complete *verbatim* text of the error
messages.

If you are getting advisory messages about items loaded via the
config.sys or autoexec.bat files then this probably means that you
have installed some (shoddily programmed) utility or device driver
that insists on having these files customized and therefore modifies
them after the bootup. Some old sound card drivers were notorious
for doing this.
