There's probably a folder somewhere in Documents and Settings>{yourname}>Local Settings>Application Data named Bearshare or perhaps .Bearshare and deleting that wold be a start. It may just be in Application Data without going through Local Settings. You'll need to open up to view all files and folders, including Hidden System Folders first.

Download ATF Cleaner from http://www.atribune.org and CCleaner from http://www.piriform.com and use each to find and clear out different types of clutter.

Then, go to http://www.malwarebytes.com and download MalwareBytes. Install it and let it update and when it restarts, run the Quick Scan. At the end click on Show Results then Remove Selected - it won't kill anything valuable, just the nasty stuff. restart the computer and do the same again but with the Full Scan.

After that restart if you think you may still be infected, click on MBAM's Logs tab then copy and paste both logs back here. It won't show any personal details but someone will be able to say if you're clean or not.

You should re-install your windows.
It will be better, if you can backup all your data before you re-installing windows.

I never installed bearshare, but somehow the virus still got on my computer. How is this possible?
It seems i may have to reinstall windows and everything. Now I wish I'd made a backup... Can I reinstall windows if I don't have the cd? I bought this computer used already with windows on it

It would have been better to start a new thread on tis one, Selina744 but now you've raised this year-old one from the dead, et's put things into perspective.

Bearshare isn't a virus as such. Sharing sites - normally sharing Copyright material illegally, act as marriage bureaux might - they introduce you to someone else and let them trawl through your computer for music they like while you go through theirs. Unfortunately, some of those people aren't as nice as you and I and they take more than they should - bank details, e-mail addresses to send Spam from etc, so although the Bearshare website is probably a safe place, it leads you to places which are not.

To see what's happening in your system, I'd like you to go to http://www.trendmicro.com and download HijackThis. Install it and click on the "Scan and Save a System Log" button. When it completes, do no more than copy the entire log using Control A and C then post it back here using Control V in the Post an Answer box.

I or someone else will see if Bearshare shows up anywhere and tell you which items to tick to remove. If we see anything in the 04 section that starts automatically when you switch on, ticking it will stop it. Also, if we find anything in the 023 section that has the ability to phone home, ticking that will stop it from doing so.

The3re will not be anything wrong with XP that can't be fixed so you don't need to worry about reinstalling.
