I have a very loud heatsink/fan from coolmaster. At first it wasn't a big deal but now its starting to bother me. Is it ok to remove a heatsink? If so what is a quiet replacement for a 1.4ghz Thunderbird Athlon.

I hope you mean the fan? You actually need both of them (heat sink and fan). AMD gave no room for little or no cooling with their processors.

I would look at getting an adapter of some sort and popping a larger quieter fan on there that offers close to the same CFM.

Check out the brakets from Zalman. They have the brakets selling separate from their flower heat sinks. Those would allow you to put up to a 120mm fan on there elevated away from the CPU so it allows for cooling everything in the vicinity of the processor. It looks pretty cool and as long as you have a good heat sink it should work good! I was going to try it because I'm tired of the Delta fan I have on my Globalwin heat sink.

I think CoolMaster fans are a wee bit shite. Mine is getting replaced I reckon cause it's far too loud!
