i've orederd some Arctic Silver Thermal Adhensive and a set of Thermal Take Ramsink for my Gf2 Ti's memory as i felt the stock ramsink dosn't perform verywell. i've never done any ramsink glueing, so my question is , what is the best way to remove the old ramsink that's glued on to the memory and how can i remove the remaining glue on the chip, will acetone do the job or do i have 2 sand it?
thanx

i wouldnt do that. its got glue on all the ram chips, you would likely break somthing trying to pry it off all of them, it would be a different story if the heat sink was flexible.

i went to the tomshardware forums and all i got was this lousy signature.

well, one thing is that they look really generic and cheap, and secondly, there are only 8 fins on each ramsink and they are really really short, which dosn't dissipitate heat verywell and thirdly, i have ALREADY ordered the Tt ramsink so i dont' want them to go wasted. and fianlly, i've replaced the stock hsf with a blueorb, and it works quite well when i overclocked my card, since memory comes 1st when you are overclocking, i thought i'd better install some better cooling^^ .. i use a Gainward GF2 Ti btw

I've been wanting to know how to get thermal adhesive off too. I'm thinking of buying a new Koolance case and purchasing the additional block for my graphics card. I cut an unfortunate corner when building my system and was dissapointed to find out that my graphics card has a adhered passive heatsink stuck to it, and there are no holes drilled into the card for mounting screws. So, if I can carefully pry the sink off, how do I get rid of the rset of the adhesive? I would think acetone would be too strong, and alcohol not strong enough...

99% alcohol will work, just takes a a bit of rubbing. i used a little piece of those green scrubbies. it was pretty difficult to get some of it off cause it wasnt applied right so it burned around the edges, the stuff that wasnt burned didnt take too much to get it off. i would highly recomend you follow the instructions on articsilver.com to dilute the adhesive, that stuff is strong.

thanx.... actually i think it's easy 2 take the ramsink off , cause on close inspection i found out that they are not glued on to the chip but stuck on to it with thermal tapes,, and i can actualy move it slightly when i apply pressure to it.. i'll take them off as soon as i gets my orders... but thanx anyway

For future reference, if you come accross a heatsink that is STUCK then 20-30 minutes in a freezer (in a bag), then gentel leverage will remove it. remember to let all condensation clear before using the card again.

If they squeeze olives to get olive oil, how do they get baby oil?

that idea in the freezer has to sound like the dumbest one I've heard. I'm surprised that wouldn't ruin the board.
