Renaming Batch of Word Files after the First Sentence in Each Document

Hey all,

A while back I had to recover some files that I had accidentally deleted and then wrote over. I got the files back, but the naming scheme was all off. Each file was assigned a hexadecimal number such as 'f258469874' and the previous title was overwritten.

I'm looking for a program that would allow me to rename all of the files based off of the first 32 characters of each document, thus giving each document a unique name that I can then sort them with.

I have 1204 documents, so manual sorting isn't really an option.

You will probably have to write some code (or get someone to write it). PowerShell can do what you want, but someone would have to write custom code to do it. There are lots of PowerShell examples available on the web.

Hi, I don't think you'll find a program to do it... but you might be able to use a VB script. Very little programming knowledge should be needed, just edit a few lines of a script that is already made.

I would definitely make a full backup of the word files before trying this. (Just zip em up and move the zip to another folder).

I have not tried these. I have no doc files and don't have Word (you need both to even test this). If you try these, you do so at your own risk.
