repair/restore of oem xp

I would like to know, pre-necessity, what the prodedure for an XP repair(or
re-install) of an OEM-ghost-type Home Edition with SP2 installed would be.
I've asked this in various forums and read answers that run the gamut. Does
anyone have a definate answer?

It depends on the source and type of the CD.
"OEM-ghost-type Home Edition with SP2"
Do you mean the CD provided by the seller for that computer?
If so the best information will come from your manual and the manufacturer.
All manufacturers do it differently and there is no one way of doing it.

The restore CD is provided by the seller and is not a true XP Home OS disk.
I'm familiar with the procedure (a Norton Ghost recover). It's just that I
get a message telling me that I now have a newer operating system (I have
installed SP1 & 2 over the course of 2+ years) and the restore won't work.
Do I simply uninstall SP2, then use the original procedure?

The reason you get different answers is because you have an OEM restore CD.
The manufacturers design how they work and they do not function the same way
as a retail Windows XP.
For this reason these Microsoft newsgroups are not a good source for
specific information on how your CD functions.

You probably have a few options.
It sounds like you are attempting what may be called a "Non Destructive
Recovery".
Depending on how the OEM set up the CD, it may not work if you have a later
Service Pack then the CD.
Uninstalling the Service Pack may resolve it.
Contact the manufacturer or check you manual for details.
