getting ready to move win10 to a new ssd, first time so bear with me
current windows+program files, etc is about 33gb, thats what I want to move to an ssd partition of 54gb to allow for expansion. I don't want to move "my documents" there, I intend to put that on a new partition on my 1tb hdd.
I thought to leave the current c: at about 100gb and move data ie, my docs, to a new partition/drive of about 800+gb for my docs and other as future warrants.
so first to shrink current c: but the windows partition tool is only letting me shrink by about 1/2 of the total partition, about 465gb vs the 864gb unused, so not sure what is going on here. win file explorer has 121gb for total used space on c:
do need a different partition tool?
I have 2 pics for showing disk mgt and the partition shrink tool to illustrate the topic, but not seeing any way to attach pics other than URL's? is that right? the only way to attach pics to a post here on Tom's is to first load them up to some web site somewhere? (like google pics) seems kinda cumbersome but I can do that if necessary

Hi, you can have a look at this thread which does concern you:
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2091642/reduce-partition-size-455gb.html

To make things shorter: The first thing I would try is to move my swap disk file off my C drive (to any other drive). Then reboot and then shrink. And defrag and shrink again if necessary. Might work or might not, its your quickest and best bet besides having to get 3rd party tools and risking doing something really wrong with a partitioning tool.

If this still doesn't work, maybe have to reinstall windows to the SSD, but also it is best to keep the SSD in one piece and not partition it. Keeping the SSD in one big chunk helps to utilise all of it. It does not help to make a 120Gb SSD into smaller partitions and have a small amount left over space on each partition as opposed to have that in one larger left over space on one parititon. Also there is no real difference really in moving a document to a folder on a drive or to another "Documents" partition on another drive, though in your case I understand that it a normal HDD and you do not want the docs on the SSD. In that case there is a difference. Also, remember to make backups often especially of valuable documents especially before rearranging the PC.

Hope this helps,
Gabor

Creating a 54GB partition on the SSD is a waste.
What size is the actual SSD. Just use the whole thing.

Moving your Docs and stuff? Easy:

For screencaps...yes, upload them to somewhere and post the link here.

thanks for the replies, I will try the shrinking tips, my ssd is 128, 121 usable, as far as partition ssd, I do want have 2 small partitions for a linux install, the root and swap. as far partitioning the remainder of the ssd was thinking like a hdd to separate os/programs/etc from data, also thinking put some constantly used data in the ssd partition for data and then remainder of data to be on hdd. so forget about a 'data' partition on the ssd, just allocate the max left after small partitions for future linux, and let windows use the space as it wants? yes? and just manage my files location to ssd or hdd based on how much usage any given file gets used.

A 128GB drive with both Windows and Linux is sort of problematic.
I don't even recommend that size for a windows only system.

With that drive, you really only have 80-85GB actual usable space. You need to leave some left for the TRIM function to do its thing.
SSD's get slower as they near full, and lifespan takes a nosedive.
